Nose art refers to paintings on the side of aircraft towards the front, or the “nose” of the craft.  In early military aviation, markings out of necessity were affixed wherever they needed to be, but as nose art developed into a personalized form of self-expression, it became standard practice to paint the front area.

This art from begins simply with primarily practical considerations, yet evolves over the decades of its use into the diverse form of artist expression you can see today.
